Via Straus Institute:
On September 14-25, 2015, the Straus Institute was pleased to once again host judges from the Office of the Thailand Judiciary. Two of the 34 judges attending were Slaikate Wattanapan, the President of the Tax Division of the Supreme Court and Jaturong Nasomjai, Justice of the Supreme Court. The judges participated in Mediating the Litigated Case, Straus’ six-day mediation training program. Peter Robinson was the lead trainer with Tim Pownall, Judge Jacqueline Connor, Judge Mitchel Goldberg, Straus Adjunct Professor Sukhsimran Singh, and Judge Alexander Williams as co-trainers.
The judges were graciously hosted by Judge Alexander Williams for two days of site visits. The first morning included a visit to Los Angeles Superior Court. This was followed by an afternoon to the United States District Court. The second day the judges were welcomed by three organizations, Asian Pacific Dispute Resolution Center; Centinela Youth Services with Director, and finally to one private mediation service the Santa Monica JAMS office where Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Jay Welsh, explained how JAMS provides mediation services.
The judges ended their stay with two days of Advanced Mediation training. Stephanie Blondell, assistant professor of law and assistant director of the Straus Institute, and private mediator, Steve Rottman, were the trainers for these two days.
This is the third time the Office of the Thailand Judiciary has sent a delegation of judges for mediation training. Previous training was in 2011 and 2013.
