If you find yourself referencing HeinOnline often, you will be pleased to hear that you can now use the new HeinOnline app available for both iPhone and iPad. It is a fast, easy, and convenient way to have access to original reference materials on the go!
The app allows you to access all the content available in the HeinOnline database and lets you search by publication title, volume, citation, or customized keyword search. For instance, if you conduct a title search for the phrase “dispute resolution”, the app will bring up a list of relevant materials from across the various Hein libraries:
You can also use Advanced Search Syntax while typing in queries, such as limiting by date or using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT). This is a great search tool especially if a basic search is yielding way too many search results to skim through. Advanced search syntax allows you to narrow down your search terms, resulting in a smaller, but more relevant document list.
For example, let’s say you are looking for articles regarding religion and arbitration authored by Prof. Michael Helfand between 2013 and 2015. Your search terms on HeinOnline would be:
title: religio*+ arbitra* AND date:[2013 TO 2015] AND creator:helfand
This search looks for documents whose title field contains words that begin with “religio”, such as Religion, Religious, and Religionist, along with words that begin with “arbitra”, such as Arbitration and Arbitrability. Additionally, it limits its search to documents whose date fields are between 2013 and 2015, and the creator field contains “Helfand”.
Once you find the document you are looking for, you can download a PDF version of it straight to your mobile device for later review.
HeinOnline has a User Guide available to help you get started using the app. You can find the app in the App Store. After downloading from the App Store, you will have to login for the first time while on the Pepperdine University network.
After connecting to the Pepperdine Wi-Fi, open the app and simply select the IP Authentication button. This gives you 30 days to access HeinOnline from anywhere you have an internet connection, until you have to come back to campus to re-authenticate again.
