October 9, 2018 | Third-year law student Anthony King is completing an externship at the Van Nuys branch of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office where he assists in the arraignment courts as well as with other assignments. Anthony prepared nine misdemeanor cases for trial, interviewed witness, handled discovery matters, and argued pre-trial motions. Six of the cases pleaded out prior to the commencement of trial. Three of those cases, two prostitution cases and a reckless driving case, went to jury trial. Anthony tried all three matters to verdict, handling every aspect of the proceedings from jury selection to closing argument and sentencing.
Assistant City Attorney Richard Schmidt noted, “All of the prosecutors who observed him in trial, and several members of the defense bar who were watching parts of the proceedings, were impressed with his performance, expressing surprise that he could do so well though still in school. We were fortunate to have Mr. King assist us over the summer and delighted to be part of his induction as a member of a very select group of legal professionals – those who have done jury trials.”
The Honorable Eric Harmon and the Honorable Andrea Thompson of the Superior Court complimented Anthony on his poise, skill, and professionalism.
Experiential learning through JD externships ensures that our students will have rigorous practice experience before graduation. Congratulations on your hard work, Anthony. Clients and employers will be confident in your skill, knowledge, and integrity.
